The unity of mind and body is the basis of the philosophy of our physical education program; studies often indicate a correlation between high achievement and physical and mental health. Our goals are to enhance coordination and strength, develop a conceptual understanding of game rules, learn cooperation and teamwork, and cultivate a healthy and active lifestyle. The curriculum is based on the Multi-activity Model, which emphasizes the development of a wide variety of motor skills and games, and is adaptable to meet the needs and interests of many students. Knowing that students have differing levels of ability and skill, we emphasize individual effort, sportsmanship, and improvement of skills as the main criteria for evaluation. Some highlights of the physical education program include:
- Exposure to the full complement of individual and team sports such as soccer, football, lacrosse, basketball, tennis, golf, baseball, and others
- Participation in the Presidential Physical Fitness testing program
- Special events such as an annual “Quidditch” match modeled after the fictional game in the Harry Potter series
- Participation in the American Heart Association’s annual Jump-a-Thon
